The History Major League Baseball Rosters | Baseball Almanac. A Major League Baseball roster is a set of players able to play for their respective Major League team. There were originally two types of rosters, the 25-man roster, and the 40-man roster. Today, those terms have changed to what we now refer to as an Active Roster and Reserve List.
